New restrictions announced for Charnwood following rise in Covid-19 cases

Additional restrictions have been announced today for Charnwood in response to a continued high number of coronavirus cases in the borough.

From 00:01 on Saturday, October 31, Charnwood will be placed in the Tier 2 (high) Covid alert level category.

Under the new restrictions, people must not meet socially with friends and family indoors in any setting – including homes, pubs and restaurants – unless they live with them or have formed a support bubble with them.

Latest data published by Leicestershire County Council shows Charnwood’s rate of 439 cases for every 100,000 people is significantly above the national average of 224 per 100,000.

On top of national restrictions, in a Tier 2 high alert area:

  • Social contact is restricted indoors to people in your own household or bubble – the rule of six applies outdoors
  • Shops and retail remain open

  • Places of worship remain open
  • Leisure facilities and gyms remain open
  • Overnight stays are allowed, in line with social contact rules
  • Hospitality remains open
  • Care homes will be closed to external visitors, apart from in exceptional circumstances
  • Childcare remains open – and supervised activity allowed in private homes

Changes to garden waste service and bulky collections

Charnwood Borough Council are having to pause the Council’s garden waste collection service for two weeks due to staff shortages.

They have also had to cancel bulky waste item collections for today (Monday, October 26).

We apologise for any inconvenience.

The services are operated by the Council’s waste partner Serco and a small number of staff have tested positive for Covid-19 and a number of employees are also having to isolate. This has impacted the service. Resources are being diverted to ensure the refuse and recycling services can continue.

Cancelling the garden waste service for two weeks will allow time for crews to return.

Matt Bradford, head of cleansing and open spaces, said: “We appreciate this is inconvenient for people but the health and wellbeing of employees and customers are paramount. We will be reviewing the situation on a daily basis.

“Once a few days of garden waste collections have been missed it is very difficult to catch up and therefore it is sensible to cancel collections for the two-week period which also means the collection cycle will be able to carry on as usual.

“We will continue to work closely with Serco who have already put in a number of measures to keep their employees safe.

“We apologise to customers for the inconvenience but these are clearly very difficult circumstances at the moment and we hope the support they have shown for the refuse and recycling crews continues. They are one of our key frontline services and have continued to operate and serve the public since the start of the pandemic.”

Covid – Increased restrictions for Leicester and parts of Leicestershire announced

Residents in Leicester and its outlying areas are to be asked to continue to follow stricter lockdown restrictions for at least two weeks, and non-essential shops will be closed.

This means the city’s bars, restaurants and hairdressers will not open on 4 July as planned, and shops that were allowed to open on 15 June will have to close again from 30 June.

Schools will close from 2 July but will stay open for children of key workers and vulnerable children.

The relaxation of shielding planned for 6 July will not happen.

Areas affected

The changes apply to Leicester city and parts of Leicestershire that touch on the city’s boundaries.

The areas of Leicestershire included in the localised lockdown are:

In Blaby District:

  • Braunstone Town (including Fosse Park)
  • Glenfield
  • Glen Parva
  • Leicester Forest East (East of the M1)
  • Thorpe Astley

In Charnwood:

  • Birstall
  • Thurmaston

Oadby and Wigston

  • All areas

We are working on a postcode checker for those who live on borders and are unsure.

A map has been published which provides further detail. Inside the red line shows the area where increased restrictions are in place.

People are being urged to make essential journeys only and stay at home as much as they can.

In addition to this, the Government has announced extra funding for further targeted communications and engagement in local areas, to encourage people to follow the guidance for hand washing, social distancing, knowing the symptoms and getting tested.

Statement from the Leader of the council

Protecting residents is our main concern and we’re working closely with Leicester City Council and the Government to bring down the number of cases.
Clearly coronavirus does not adhere to lines on a map. And although county rates are below the national and regional averages, we can’t be complacent and it makes sense to step up restrictions in areas closer to the city. This is the first localised lockdown on this scale and undoubtedly there will be issues to iron out. I understand this is disappointing news for residents, parents of schoolchildren and businesses when most of the country is opening back up but it’s crucial that people follow the latest advice. Observing social distancing, handwashing, wearing a face mask where required and getting tested if you have symptoms remain vital.

Our actions play a key role in shaping what happens next and I encourage people to heed the advice and play their part in helping to save lives and livelihoods.

Garden Waste to return to fortnightly collections

Garden waste to return to fortnightly collections
Charnwood Borough Council is returning its garden waste service to its normal fortnightly collections from Monday June 15.The service has been operating in a limited capacity since the end of April following a period of suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the Council and its waste partner Serco say staffing levels will now allow the fortnightly collections to resume.

It also means that from June 15, customers will leave their bins out on their normal garden waste collection day and not a Monday as they have been asked to do over the past few weeks.

The schedule is available on the Council website.

Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for major contracts said: “I’m pleased that we are now able to return to fortnightly collections for the garden waste service.

“We were forced to suspend the service at the beginning of the pandemic due to staff shortages but we’re now in a position where it is possible to go back to the regular collections.

“The current pandemic is putting additional pressure on resources and the waste collection services which includes garden waste. We are working closely with Serco to monitor service closely in case we experience any further staff shortages.

“I would like to thank all of our garden waste service customers for their understanding and patience during the pandemic.

“Our refuse collectors have collected thousands of bins throughout these difficult times and our residents have continued to show support and appreciation to the crews. From June 13, customers will also be able to check their collection days via the Council website. Just visit, my.charnwood.gov.uk

The service which has over 30,000 customers, was suspended in March due to staff shortages caused by the coronavirus pandemic. This decision meant resources could be diverted into the recycling and refuse collections which are more critical functions.
